Maybe you can include a little time pressure to the children to train them on applying the PMDAS to math questions quickly.
You could also make the way children answer long questions easier. If there is only one text box for the final answer in long equations, it might be difficult for them to do it mentally. You could add more text boxes for each step of the solution, i.e, the first solution box is where the parentheses are eliminated already, and so on. This might also help their teacher to point out the operation where the students are not good at, and concentrate on those.
